A practical fault-finding guide for a single radiator that stays cold while the rest of your heating works normally.

When one radiator is not heating up but the others work normally, the problem is often local to that radiator rather than the boiler. A stuck thermostatic radiator valve, incorrectly set lockshield, trapped air or restricted pipework can all reduce heat, and each needs a slightly different check.

Work through the following steps with the heating switched off where advised. Take a photo of the valve positions before making changes, and stop if you find a leak, damaged valve or anything you cannot identify confidently.

Start with the simple radiator checks

First, turn the heating on and allow enough time for the system to warm up. Check whether the radiator is completely cold, warm at one end only, or cooler than nearby radiators. Also check that the room thermostat is calling for heat and that other radiators are behaving normally.

If the radiator has a thermostatic radiator valve, or TRV, turn the numbered head to its highest setting. A TRV controls room temperature by moving a small pin in the valve body. The plastic head can sometimes be knocked, fitted incorrectly or left unused for a long period, allowing the pin to seize.

  • Turn the TRV head to its maximum setting.

  • If safe, remove the head according to its fixing method, without undoing the valve body.

  • Check that the small metal pin moves down and springs back gently.

  • Never force, pull out or unscrew the pin if it is stuck.

A seized pin may sometimes be freed with gentle repeated pressure, but forcing it can cause damage or a leak. If water appears around the valve, refit the head and stop the check.

Check the lockshield valve carefully

The lockshield valve is usually at the opposite end of the radiator from the TRV. It is normally covered by a cap and controls the amount of water flowing through the radiator. If it has been closed too far, the radiator may remain cold even though the heating system and other radiators are working correctly.

Remove only the outer cap if it is designed to come off by hand. Do not turn the spindle repeatedly without recording its original position, as this can alter the system balance. If you make an adjustment, a small change such as an eighth or quarter turn is more appropriate than opening it fully, followed by time for the radiator to respond.

Recent radiator replacement, decorating or plumbing work can leave a lockshield in the wrong position. It can also disturb the balance between radiators, causing nearby units to heat quickly while the affected radiator receives too little flow. A heating engineer may need to measure temperatures and rebalance the whole system rather than simply opening one valve.

Bleed the radiator and watch for warning signs

Air trapped inside a radiator can prevent hot water circulating properly, particularly if the radiator is cold at the top or makes bubbling sounds. Switch the heating off, let the radiator cool, protect the wall and floor, then use a radiator key to open the bleed screw very slightly. Keep a cloth and container ready, as water may follow the escaping air.

Close the screw as soon as water flows steadily, without overtightening it. Check the boiler pressure afterwards if you have a sealed system, because bleeding can reduce pressure. Follow the boiler manufacturer’s guidance before topping it up.

Stop and seek professional help if bleeding releases dirty water continuously, the bleed screw will not close, the valve leaks, or the system pressure falls significantly. Dark water can indicate corrosion and poor system water quality, while repeated air or dirt problems may point to a wider heating fault.

Consider sludge, blockage and restricted pipework

If the TRV operates, the lockshield is open and bleeding makes no difference, the radiator may have sludge or a local blockage. Debris can collect in the valve, radiator or connecting pipework, especially in older systems or where inhibitor levels have not been maintained. A radiator that is warm only in a small area, or takes much longer than others to heat, can warrant further investigation.

Pipework restrictions may also follow building work, a pinched flexible connection or a partially closed valve elsewhere in the circuit. Do not remove valves or disconnect pipes yourself, since heating water can be hot and pressurised. A qualified engineer can test flow and return temperatures, inspect the valves and decide whether cleaning, a service or a powerflush assessment is suitable.

Flats and communal heating systems

Radiators in flats connected to communal or district heating systems may not respond in the same way as those on an individual boiler. Heat may be controlled by a communal plant room, HIU, programmer or landlord-managed valve, and the system may have set operating times or flow limits.

Check your tenancy or building guidance before adjusting valves, and report persistent faults to the managing agent or facilities team. If only one radiator is affected, the local valve may still need attention, but changes to communal equipment should only be made by the responsible heating contractor.

A single cold radiator is often straightforward to resolve, but repeated faults, leaking valves, dirty system water and recent radiator changes can signal a problem that needs proper testing. Do not continue adjusting valves if you are unsure, especially where the system is pressurised or part of a communal installation.
